Disposal sites

The province of Limburg has appointed 19 former disposal sites which require further investigation, to assess if there is a risk for the user. To determine the exact location, depth and type of the waste material, information is needed. Normally this is determined by placing drillings randomly across the area. This is costly and frequently offers only meager insight in the possible risks of the disposal site.

Drilling strategically

By placing the drillings more strategically one can obtain a greater insight in the possible risks of the disposal site. To achieve this Medusa has been asked to carry out a non-intrusive preliminary investigation and give advice on the location of the drillings. Using a ground penetrating radar, the Medusa detector and a XRF-scanner information could be obtained about the thickness of the soil covering the disposed material, presence and concentration of heavy metals and the size of the disposal site could be determined.

With this advice the province of Limburg could carry out the intrusive investigation more efficiently. Causing less trouble for the people and giving a better insight in the possible risks of the disposal site.
