Trouble water

In the lakes of Loosdrecht, a large quantity of small mud particles is suspended in the water column. This results in blocking of light, preventing the growth of  waterplants. To improve this growth, the sunlight has to penetrate at least one meter below the watersurface.

Trenches

Digging trenches in the bottom of the lake, can be a solution to the problem of trouble water. The expectation is that the suspended particles will setlle in these deeper areas.

In order to decide where to dig, the location and concentration of the mud was investigated by mapping with the Medusa system. To get an integrated understanding of the situation in the Loosdrechtse Plassen, additional soil- and water samples have been taken to determine if the mud consists of peat or algae.
