EM & Radar

At the beginning of the Second World War, when the Dutch tried to track enemy aircraft using radio telescopes, they would never for a moment have considered putting these antennas face down on the ground.

Yet today, such ground facing radar systems are very much the norm in geophysics. Radar systems make use of the various electromagnetic qualities in the soil. Analysis of the signal's return can reveal much about the composition or structure of the soil. A way of looking into the ground, without the use of a spade.
