Sound

‘Sound’ is not only something you hear when you turn on the radio. It is also a collective name for a whole series of phenomena which have to do with vibrations in the air, in water or through solid materials. With ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic vibrations are used to gather information on the structure of the soil. In a similar way, the reflections of sound vibrations provide information on, for example, the depth of water or the layers of the soil.

In addition, the scraping "sound" you will hear if something is dragged over sediments can reveal information about the nature of that sand. Logical really, as the scraping sound produced by fine sand will be different from the sound produced by a pebbled beach. Sound is therefore a usefull physical phenomenon for obtaining information on the soil.
