Multibeam
A multibeam sonar transmits multiple sonar beams at different angles. This swath of sound maps the sea floor directly below the ship, and in a swath around the vessel. The system accurately determines the time between sending and receiving a pulse. Because the wave speed through water is known, it is possible to determine the waterdepth. With the help of tracklines the area can be covered completely.
A multibeam sonar can be used to map the sea floor, for example to monitor dredging works.
