Sub-bottom

A sub-bottom profiler is an acoustic measuring system used to map structure of the sediment. A low frequency acoustic pulse penetrates the soil a few meters to several dozens of meters, depending on the structure and system used. The pulse reflects from objects or layers and the intensity of this echo is recorded by a receiver. The system is dragged close to or in contact with the sediment bed using a vessel.

There are many applications for the sub-bottom profiler including geotechnical and archeological research. For example detection of objects, pipelines and cables on top or beneath the sediment and investigation of soil structure.
